PROLOGUE
"RINNNGGGG!!!" My alarm clock burst into life, and I was suddenly awakened to the dawn of Christmas day. It was 6:00 a.m., and the bright, warming sun was not yet gleaming on my cheeks. It took me a few seconds to realize what day it was, but once I gained some consciousness, I was immediately out of bed excited for the big trip that lay before me: our annual family excursion to Palm Springs. I rubbed my tired eyes as I staggered my way to the bathroom where I took a quick bubbly hot bath to arouse my senses. I quickly dried myself, and put on the clothes I had prepared the night before in anxiety of what I believed would be a perfect trip. I grabbed my bag which was jammed to the fullest with 2 pairs of clothes, video games, magazines, & more; I could only hope that my mother wouldn't open up the bag suspicious to why I had so much to bring on a 2 day trip. As I made my way down the old wooden stairs, the usual creaking was drowned out by the rumbling of our Dodge Mini-van. My mother yelled for my brother to come down and soon was telling me to help with the loading. As I packed our bags into the 1994 Dodge Caravan, I soon found myself thinking of my father who was away on a business trip for the holiday weekend. After seeing the distressed look on my face, my mother gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, and said "cheer up son, we're gonna have a great time!" I looked up at her, smiled, agreed and was soon pondering the memories of all the great times we had had at Palm Springs and on the way there. After my brother came down to help with the packing, my family and I were soon packed up in the van ourselves. Everything seemed the same that day as any Christmas we had before except for one thing. I looked around the mini-van and soon realized what it was: my father was not with us which meant he would not be driving us safely there and back as he had done in our previous family trips.
