Chinese Mythology
Though Yi was at first angry with Chang O, he did love her and quickly forgave her. To make her more comfortable on the cold moon, he built her a magnificent palace out of fragrant cinnamon wood. But Yi can only visit his wife once a month on the night of the new moon. This is the reason why the moon is gone for about one day every month, it is because Yi is visiting Chang O. Some other things that this mythology explains are why there are no mountains between Jizhou and the Han River and why magpies are bald-headed. It has stories about how when people are bad then they have to serve punishment for doing something, an example of this was to chop at a tree until it has fallen but the tree heals itself after every chop. This is like what Prometheus did and how he had to have his liver eaten out every day. It also says how Nu Wa creates men, the earth, the heavens, how the heavens and earth were separated, and how the sea was made. It also has a story about how a city has to send a sacrifice to a river deity, this is almost exactly like how Athens had to send the sacrifice to Crete. Chinese mythology has many themes that are all related to how the ancient Chinese viewed themselves and about their morals and values. Here are some of their features. Myths are interwoven with history, many of the characters in this mythology are historical people that we have written proof. The ancient Chinese praised labor and creation. They encouraged perseverance and self-sacrifice, one example of this is the story of Gun and Yu trying to tame the floods.
