JOHN J. SPARKMAN

1946-1979

     Sparkman was born on December 20, 1899, in an simple tenant farm home near Hartselle in Morgan
County.  Sparkman had ten brothers and sisters, therefore he grew up knowing the importance of being
thrifty.  He had a religious background and had a great desire to learn.  In 1917, Sparkman was able to
enroll in the University of Alabama because of a cotton crop that made him $75.  There he won a history
and political science fellowship, was editor of the Crimson-White, and was president of the student body.  
He was awarded the faculty cup at graduation for his contributions to the University.
     Sparkman received his law degree and returned to Huntsville where he practiced from 1925-36.  He was
elected to represent the Eighth District in the United States House of Representatives.  In ten years in the
House,  he served on the Military Affairs Committee and was majority whip.  
     In 1946,  Senator John H. Bankhead, Jr., died, creating a unique situation for Sparkman.
